Introduction   Monday, 31st January 2000 Issue 107.   Content Hello! I really have to say I'm concerned by two things this week, so I thought I'd get them off my chest early in the newsletter. (Or you can move straight onto this week's specials on the right) 1. December 31st 2000. Over the weekend there was an advert in a Sydney newspaper from a 5 star hotel. I quote "The stage is set for next New Year's Eve to be bigger and better than ever before..........so pick up the phone on February 1, book your room and rest easy until December 31, 2000. I rang and checked the rates were $1584 for a 3 night minimum stay in a deluxe harbour view room including GST. All I can say here is that there are going to be many hotels or organisations that will try to make a killing on this years' December 31st celebration, by claiming "It's the real millennium" or "last year was just a warm up". Even if it was or wasn't I think these guys should have learnt their lessons from the price gouging of last year. So, for future reference we are not going to advertise or promote any package for December 31st, 2000 that rips our members off because hotels or organisations "suddenly" believe that last year was just a warm up. December 31st 2000 should be celebrated but at a reasonable cost! (Don't worry, we'll keep our eyes peeled for December 31st bargains when they arise! If any hotels are reading our newsletter - this is your cue!) 2. High season implemented during the Olympics Most of us have heard the rumour of cheap fares out of Australia during the Olympics. It's yet to be confirmed or denied but here's some news that may shock a few of you. If you travel to Asia from Australia during the period of the 15th of September to the 4th of October the you will be paying a higher fare! That's right! The airlines have implemented a "special high season" for departures during that Olympic period. There's no word on fares to Europe or the States yet. Fingers crossed. (If anything does happen it will happen at the very last minute, so don't plan your holidays around it, just be prepared to travel at the drop of a hat on dates specified exactly by the airlines - if it happens!)
