It is important to realise that Nyx is a Unix based shell account system. This means that you use your Nyx account via an interactive login session.  BOTS ARE NOT ALLOWED!

Obtaining a Nyx account is a 2 stage process:

1. Creating your unvalidated account.
2. Validating your account to obtain full privileges (news/email/web/etc)

Creating your unvalidated account

You will need a 'telnet' program to connect to Nyx. If you are connecting from another Unix based machine you can simply use the command:

• telnet nyx.net - When prompted for a login: enter new .

  Alternatively, if you have a Java-based Web browser you can use our Java Telnet applet at http://nyx.nyx.net:8002/

  Ok, you should now be in the system and looking at "New User Menu"

  j       Join (that is, create personal or semi-anonymous 'preview' account)

  You should 'l'ook around the system and when you feel you want to join use the 'j'oin option.

  Creating the actual account

  • You will be asked to confirm if you really want to create an account. Answer y
  • Next read and re-read the Terms & Conditions . If you agree to the terms then you may proceed, if not then unfortunately we cannot provide you an account. Answer y if you agree to the terms.
  • Next, You will be asked if you want information on Semi-Anonymous accounts. Simply, a semi-anon account has the ID anon???? as opposed to a normal account which has ID jsmith .
    Answer according to taste.
  • You will now be asked to provide some personal details:
    • First Name
    • Middle Name
    • Surname
    • Home phone number (including area/country code)
    • City & State (& Country)
    • Zip code
    • Street address
    • Where or from whom did you hear about Nyx? (yes we are interested :)
    • Your age
    • Your School or Employer
    • Your Position at above
  • You should then confirm all the above details, if correct press y
  • Next enter your chosen password and repeat to confirm.
  • The system will now attempt to find you a login name based on your answers to the first 3 questions. Do not attempt to manipulate your 'names' in order to get a 'nice' login name - If you do, your account will be terminated.
  • You will now be asked to try to login using your assigned userid and password. You should do this within 60 seconds or the computer will timeout. Don't worry if this happens, simply reconnect to the server again and use your new account.
  • The system will page through a screen (or 2) of messages called the 'motd' (Message of the Day) - please familiarise yourself with reading these as major announcements will be placed here (and posted in nyx.announce). Also, on your first login, will be a Welcome message. Please read this also as it will not be displayed again.
  • You now have your unvalidated Nyx account

  Validating your account

  In order to obtain full Nyx access, you must validate your account.
  This involves a process of you proving to us that you are who you say you are. Please read the how-to file, follow the instructions, print out the form , fill it in and mail it to Nyx.
