System Administrator, Applied Geographics, Inc., Boston, MA

  • Designed and implemented a security protocol enhancing protection of internal network resources. This incorporated a hybrid packetfilter/proxy linux firewall, centralized logging, intrusion detection, and encryption.

  • Implemented a complete network backup solution with a total estimated capacity of 300GB.

  • Consulted on security aspects of Applied Geographics, Inc. software development for clients including the U.S. Navy, Army Corp of Engineers, Alcoa, Inc. and the City of West Hartford, CT. My role included network protocol specification, encryption and hashing algorithms, and packet filtering implications.

October 1998 - September 1999

System Engineer, Response, Inc., La Crosse, WI

  • Built and configured mission specific servers tailored to client requirements. These requirements include firewall, email, web, application, database, and file server functions. Server operating systems included Windows NT and Linux (2.0x and 2.2x kernel)

  • Designed and implemented multiple node Frame Relay WANs facilitating network connectivity for clients between remote offices. Installed and configured Cisco routers and worked with local ISPs to provide Permanent Virtual Circuits between remote nodes.

  • Planned and implemented migrations from Novell 3.x/4.x networks to Windows NT. Platform migrations were transparent to end users and resulted in minimal downtime for client networks.

  • Designed and executed Y2K assessments for client networks including software inventory, BIOS and embedded chip compliance checks, and upgrade recommendations.

August 1996 - October 1998

Electronic Messaging Analyst, Response, Inc., Rochester, MN

  • Maintained and updated the Control Data Mail*Hub X.500 directory containing the mail routing tables for a 20,000+ user enterprise network. Responsible for monitoring nightly updates to the database, designing and implementing an appropriate backup strategy for one of the key systems in the update process, and troubleshooting and resolving update failures.

  • Improved workflow efficiency and resource utilization through the design, implementation, and administration of project management databases using Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 and Microsoft Access. Programmed database frontends using Active Server Pages (ASP), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Mail Applications Programming Interface (MAPI), Visual Basic, VBScript and JavaScript running on Internet Information Server 3.0.

  • Increased enterprise wide electronic messaging stability and efficiency by planning and coordinating the migration of over 7000 users from various electronic mail platforms to Microsoft Exchange Server. Migrated platforms include UNIX based POP3 and IMAP, Eudora, Microsoft Mail for Macintosh and PC, VAX VMS Mail, and OfficeVision.

  • Developed an application allowing direct access to personal Microsoft Exchange Server mailboxes from Windows NT workstations configured for generic autologon.

January 1996 - August 1996

Technology Implementation Representative, Response, Inc., Rochester, MN

  • Improved network efficiency and decreased overall network utilization by planning and coordinating the redistribution of TCP/IP address resources among different class C subnets.

  • Provided installation and support of workstation hardware, software and peripheral components for an 18,000+ user enterprise network. Operating systems supported include NT 3.51, NT 4.0, Windows 95, Windows 3.x and Macintosh.

October 1994 - January 1996

Geographic Information Systems Coordinator, Bankhead National Forest, Double Springs, AL

  • Installed and configured hardware and software for establishing connectivity between user workstations and the Internet via a console based interface (Lynx/Telnet/FTP). Internet connectivity was provided via the Data General mainframe.

  • Trained users in methods of utilizing government and non-government related internet resources to obtain job specific data.

  • Coordinated and implemented the update of the Bankhead NF Geographic Information System (GIS) database using Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology, digitizers, and GIS software.

  • Improved the efficiency of GIS updates by programming a C application for downloading the data from the GPS data recorder.
