Combining sports car styling and performance with comfort and luxury features, the 1971 Celica ST 2-Door Sport Coupe became an immediate success. Building on the success of the original Celica ST, Toyota introduces the Celica GT in 1974 and the Celica GT Liftback in 1977. Motor Trend's "Import Car of the Year" award was bestowed on Celica in 1976 and again in 1978. With a distinct European influence in its rounded contours, Toyota unveiled the second-generation Celica ST, GT and GT Liftback in 1978. Toyota introduced the third-generation Celica in 1982. It combined a pronounced wedge shape, sporty style and performance with legendary Toyota reliability. In 1983, Celica GT-S was added to the lineup and quickly became the image-leading Celica. 1986 was the year for the all-new, front-wheel drive, fourth-generation Celica. Smooth contours, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC[?] 16-valve engine and 4-wheel independent suspension helped make the new Celica a leader. The All-Trac[?] Turbo was unveiled in 1988 with a high-performance turbocharged powerplant and all-wheel drive. Toyota introduced the fifth-generation Celica in 1990. A bold, dramatic design set this Celica apart from its competitors. The 1992 Celicas received revised front styling, larger wheels and tires, various performance improvements and revised taillamps for a more aggressive appearance. In 1993, an Anti-lock Braking System ( ABS[?] ) was made standard on the All-Trac[?] Turbo and available for the first time on the Celica GT convertible along with standard 4-wheel disc brakes. For 1994, the Celica was all-new, available in both coupe and liftback body styles in ST and GT trim levels. The performance, style, safety and value of Celica had been upgraded with standard dual air bags SRS,* upgraded drivetrains and available ABS[?] . The 1994 GT received performance and luxury-equipment upgrades. In 1995 a new convertible, based on the recently redesigned GT Coupe, was introduced. In 1996, Toyota celebrates the Silver Anniversary of the Celica by releasing two limited edition vehicles: the 25th Anniversary GT Convertible and ST Liftback, with commemorative badges, numbering and additional features. (See Models/Features for details.) Minor styling revisions to the front fascia -- plus changes to standard and optional equipment -- add even more value to Toyota's affordable sports/GT car. _________________________________________________________________
