LIGHT: AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT

A growing amount of research conducted at leading universities demonstrates that adequate illumination is essential for providing visual information about your environment. Further ,the intensity of light in your environment can have a major impact on how well you see, read and perform visually demanding tasks.

It is estimated that over 85 percent of the information processed about our environment is visual in nature. Light's importance is seen in a study of 900 people who rated the relative importance of twelve factors in their environmental space. Good lighting ranked first in importance followed by good ventilation and comfortable temperature. Quality lighting, and not merely illumination for adequate visibility, is required if you want to maximize the advantages of the illumination you live and work under. For example, lighting may be of sufficient amount to perform your visual work but be excessively bright so as to lead to discomfort glare due to improper positioning of the light source. You must have th eright amount and it must be presented correctly to have good quality illumination indoors. Our tilted stand positions the light just right for you.

The Environmental Result:

Many more people, both old and young, spend more than 23 hours of their 24 hour day indoors, where illumination rarely exceeds twilight amounts (see light levels table).

Therefore, people are dependent more and more on good quality illumination indoors where they spend almost all their time.

LIGHT LEVELS IN OUR ENVIRONMENT (in lux)

TWILIGHT.........................Below 750
* Indoors at home................200 - 500
* Indoors at office..............400 - 700
* Drafting room................700 - 1,000

SPRINGTIME (Spring Equinox)

* Sunrise........5:50 AM..............750
.................6-10 AM............2,500
.................6:20 AM............5,000
.................6:40 AM...........10,000
.................6:45 AM...........12,000

* Noon.............................87,000
.................5:05 PM...........12,000
.................5:15 PM...........10,000
.................5:30 PM............5,000
.................5:40 PM............2,500

* Sunset.........6:00 PM..............750

* Outdoor light levels represent the approximate illumination level (lux) for clear sky conditions at the spring equinox for the middle USA. Sunrise/sunset is defined as half the sun's disk above the horizon. Indoor levels represent typical indoor ranges for all US geographic areas.
