Before

Since I got such a good deal on remodeling the kitchen, I was able to remodel the dining/utility room at the same time. As you can see, the pink theme extended into this room also. That folding door and all of the trim in here was painted pink. As if the cheap pink vertical blinds on that window wasn't bad enough, the French door, which didn't get photographed, had a matching set... not to mention that the door frame was painted pink also.

The wallpaper in here was the least offensive in the house, but wasn't applied very well. That's wallpaper in the laundry closet too... not matching, of course. The closet actually had a nice mirror folding door, but my new washer and dryer were too large to use them... unless I moved that wall an inch or two.

Are you wondering what that dark thing is under the window? That's the "fireplace" that was advertised with the house. It was pretty much a gas heater with a tacky fireplace facade on it. It was rendered inoperable when I had gas lines installed for the dryer and stove just before I moved in. (The gas line running to it was a solid copper pipe running along the outside of the house. Not exactly ideal.) The water heater is behind that little pink folding door and had the same copper gas pipe running to it, which was replaced with flex line when the new lines were run.

After

This room was transformed also. The tacky fireplace was removed. The window was replaced by a door that exits to the back yard. (My vision here was that it would open to a deck.) Since I bought a front-loading washer, I was able to stack it and the dryer to make it easier to access the water heater. A portable storage bin could be used to store laundry supplies to the left of the machines.

My original plan was to replace the pink French door with a better replacement French door. However, while talking to the contractor, I opened the door and realized that, if I planned to use this room as the dining room, having a French door would interfere with the function so I settled on a nice sliding door.

I used the same vinyl flooring in here that I used in the kitchen. There was a concrete step (painted pink, too) leading into this room from the kitchen. I put that outside that new back door and had the contractors build a new oak step for the transition.

The only light switch in this room was by the kitchen door. To meet code and to make life much more convenient, four-way switches were installed at each of the three entrances, too.
