War and Peace is truely a strategic level game - units are represented as abstract strength points, with battle being clashes between stacks of units. There are three types of units - infantry, cavalry, and leaders. Cavalry are only distinguished by the fact that they can move independently of leaders. Leaders are key to the game - they are necessary for infantry movement, can force march units to move them farther, and their ratings serve as combat modifiers. The only real tactical consideration is that the side in a battle with superior cavalry strength may withdraw from the battle without taking additional losses. In general, the first few scenarios (1-4) are all similar - Napoleon must race against time to defeat one or more of the European powers before the others sense that France is vulnerable and enter the war against her. The objective of the non-French player is principally to slow and disperse the French advance so that Napoleon can be defeated and turned back late in the game. Tom
