Memorial Day morning

To raise funds, the church's scout troop offered to place a flag in my front yard this morning at dawn, so I signed up. It's beautiful. They'll take it down again at dusk, and then also perform the same service on Flag Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The Boy Scouts of America is a wonderful enterprise; the Support Our Scouts Act of 2005 definitely has my support.

New Roof

I finally hired a contractor to replace the old shingles on the roof of my home. The crew used something called "Tamko," which are some kind of a laminated or fiberglass version of a traditional asphalt shingle. We were given a choice of color; I asked for one of the brighter or warmer brown colors, because I reasoned that a lighter color would reflect more heat than a dark or black colored shingle. But that was a gut reaction; I wonder if somebody has conducted a study measuring the heat conductivity of different colored roof materials.
