New York, May 14.--"The great mistake I made was that for 20 years I played the devoted lover, whereas I should have been the cave man," William Grant Brown said yesterday, summing up the matrimonial experience about to culminate in a Reno suit for divorce. Mrs. Brown, president fo the State Federation of Women's Clubs, has gone to Reno, Nev., to bring action. "For twenty years," the reformer and civic worker said, as he paced the floor of his law office in the Woolworth Building, "I yielded to Mrs. Brown's wishes on every matter partaining to our married life. I had no other desire than to make her happy. She was ambitious. She wanted a career in public life. Although this natually meant some sacrifice of the things that go to make up the home life of the average man, I gladly seconded her hopes and encouraged her in every way I could. Indeed, without wishing to seem vainglorious, I can say that it was I who gave her her first instruction in the great broad principles that underlie the woman's suffrage movement. When we were first married she was like a child in her views on the questions of the day. But she learned rapidly and seen began tota sie the fascination of public life. Then her ambition grew beyond all bounds of reason, but still I went on, blindly encouraging her and backing her up in everything she did, not see, as I should have seen, that my course would inevitably lcad to--this! "Incompatibility!" the lawyer exclaimed bitterly. "That, I am now told, is to be Mrs. Brown's reason in court for wanting a divorce. What does incompatibility mean? I had always thought, in a vague sort of way, it meant a condition in which two people's ideas and ways of life differed so radically as to make it impossible for them to get along together. But, I give you my word, until Mrs. Brown's father and mother came to me the day after her departure and told me that was why she has gone West, I could not have even imagined that the word could apply to anything in our life together. Well, the long and short of it was that I didn't know anything about women. I've learned a lot in the last month. Instead of ldealizing Mrs. Brown and deluding myself with the supreme confidence that whatever she did was all right and beyond question, I should have taken her firmly in hand and managed her as most men manage their wives. The mystery of why Mrs. Brown went away is as great to me as it was a month ago. Until she has filed her suit I will not take any steps to oppose her. My future source will depend entirely on what charges she makes. If they are discreditable to me I shall defend myself. Mrs. Brown has many friends who are not my friends, and perhaps their influence is responsible. Whatever the real reason is, it is something far more fundamentail than 'incompatibility.' It may be that she has such great plans for the future in public life that she thinks I would be a handicap to her. Perhaps she thinks I'm not rich enough to give her the surroundings that should go with a woman who is doing big things." No direct word came from here yesterday from Mrs. Brown, so far as could be learned, but in women's club circles it was reported she is already in Reno. If successful in her suit it is understood she wil go to France in the interests of the Salvation Army. ---------------------- ... ______________________________________________________________________________ name of newspaper: Fitchburg Sentinal address: Fitchburg, Massacusetts date of article: Friday, May 15, 1916 edition: volumn 44, number 8 page: page 8 column: 4 source: https://www.newspapers.com/image/65311004 ... ---------- READY FOR 20,000 CONVENTION WOMEN [picture] [picture] MRS. New York, May 14.--State regulation of marriage was advocated in the report of the committee on families as presented to-day by Mrs. Wm. "To keep together a family wherein there exits the evidence of a mental defective strain," Mrs. Brown reported, "is to commit a serious offense againts the state, for with mathematical precision it is handed down from one generation to the other. However, when the conditions in the home are good, it is equally harmful to break up a family. Here the state has a function to perform. In the near future let us hope we shall follow the trail already blazed by some of our western states, and legally restrain the marriage of the mentally deficient, delinquent or tained by hereditary diseage or crime." ----------------- ... ______________________________________________________________________________ name of newspaper: St. Johnsbury Caledonian location: 190 Federal Street St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819 phone number: unknown website: http://www.caledonianrecord.com/ about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Caledonian-Record source: https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84023253/ No further mention of Grant Brown since 19180109. ______________________________________________________________________________ date of article: Wednesday, July 12, 1916 page: page 11 WELLS RIVER ... The Grand Trunk Railway began in the 1850s running from Quebec City, through St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to Portland, Maine. Hundreds from Megantic packed up and resettled in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire, following their neighbors in a stady trickle from the 1850s to the 1930s. Of theearlier migrants, most took up dairy farming and logging. Many worked in the sawmills of New England in summer and ventured as far afield as Tennessee for winter work. Later, groups of young men went to work in the granite of Vermont which took their toll in accidents and industrial disease. The cemetert at Websterville, Vermont, now speaks for them. The westward expansion of the railway to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1867 was the answer for many Megantic families. The first large group to leave for the west was a family party of more than 100 Henderson, Ralston, McCutcheon, Robinsons, Wrights, Vernors and Walkers, including the 78-year-old widowed mother of the Henderson clan. (10) The group first settled in the Davenport, Iowa area, purchasing large section of the land in Pilot Townhip. The group moved on to Cherokee County in 1888. Other groups soon followed to Iowa, Wisconsin, the Dakotaa and Minnesota.
