Canton de Leeds, 1802 Saint-Jacques de Leeds, 1902 Tome 2 page 178 NUGENT The Nugent's originated from Ireland. Andrew Nugent Sr. was born March 17, 1806 in County Down Ireland. After he came to Canada, he worked for a while ar Quebec then settled in Ste. Agathe where he married Honorah Brown, in 1836. They had five children. John and Samuel, twins born May 24, 1837, Elizabeth born May25, 1840, Mary Ann born Feb 28, 1843 and Honorah born Nov. 20, 1847. They left Ste. Agathe in 1855 and moved to the 5th Range of Leeds, where they farmed the rest fo their lived on Lot 7B, 8A. Andrew served as a Councillor. Andrew Nugent Sr. died Feb. 25, 1890 and Honorah Brown Nugent died Ref. 27, 1890. Andrew's funeral was taking place in the house when his wife passed away. A brother, John Nugent, came out from Ireland the same time as Andrew. They were separated at Quebec when they came off the boat and never saw each other again. Samuel Nugent Sr. was the son of Andrew Nugent and Honorah Brown, and was born May 24, 1837 at Ste. Agathe where later he attended school. His family lived near where Lincoln Eagen lives today. He moved to the 5th Ranges of Leeds Lots 7B, 8A when he was eighteen. He married Janet Allan, and the had twelve children. Agnes who married Thomas George Nutbrown. They farmed on the 8th Range of Leeds. Honorah who married Andrew MacRae. They farmed on the 3rd Range of Leeds. Honorah was a school teacher. Andrew Nugent married May Canfield and they farmed at Prince Albert, Sask. John Married Caroline McDougall, they farmed at Maymount, Sask. Jemina was a dressmaker, she married Charles Clouston and the farmed at Edmonton, Alta. Margaret was a school teacher and married Albert Frizzell. They farmed on the 4th Range of Leeds. George died at the age of 2 1/2 years. Samual unmaiired. Lydia married Lorne Davidson. They farmed on the 11th Range of Leeds, her husband is deceased and she now resided at Lennoxville. There are only three of the above Nugent family living William, Samuel aand Lydia. Samuel Nugent Sr. farmed on Range 10, Lot6. He died in 1921, his wife followed him, Sept 28, 1930. They are buried at Kinnear's Mills Anglican Cemetery. Samuel nugent Jr. "Sam" is the son of Samuel Nugent and Janet Allan. He was born Nov. 20, 1891 on Range 10, Lot6. He attended school on the 10th Range of Leeds and his first school teacher was Margaret Allan. He helped at home with the chores, and bringing in wood. He liked to slide toboggans. When Sam went to school the term was only five months. He went to houseparties and had to work hard on the farm. Sam acquired his father's farm in 1919, where he farmed until 1969 when he retired and moved to Kinnear's Mills. He was a councillot at Leeds Village for 19 years although not all his years were served at one time. Sam is a very kind man and always had candy and treats for all the little neighbours' children who call to see him John Nugent was the son of Andrew Nugent Sr. and Honorah Brown. He was born May 24, 1837 at Ste. Agathe. He attended school at Ste. Agathe. They lived near where Lincoln Eagen lives today. He moved to the 5th Range of Leeds, Lot 7B 8A when he was eightteen. He married Mary Johnston, April 10, 1866. They were married by Rev. T.L. Ball. They had seven children. William born Fev. 12, 1867, died Paril 6, 1875. Thomas Andrew born Sept. 11, 1868, died around 1940. Nora boen Sept. 28, 1872, died March 6, 1875. Samuel born May 7, 1874, died Dec. 14, 1947. Mary Ann born July 9, 1877, died in 1881. William David born July 5, 1879, died in 1881. Andrew born July17, 1885, died April 20, 1965. John Nugent acquired his father's farm where he stayed for the rest of his life. He served as a councillor. John Nugent June 12, 1915 and his wife Mary Johnston Nugent died Feb. 6, 1934. Andrew Nugent Jr. was the son of John Nugent and Mary Johnston. He was born July 17, 1885 on the 5th Range of Leeds, Lot 7B 8A. He attened school at Kinnear's Mills and at the 10th Range school. He worked with his father on the farm. Andrew Nugent married Isabella Appleton Murray, Sept. 28, 1909. They had seven children. John Edgar born Oct. 13, 1910, he married Galdys McKell. Edger is deseased and Gladys now lives at Howick. Effie died in infancy. Leslie Murray born Feb. 26, 1915. Kenneth Robert born May 28, 1917, married Eileen Henderson. They live at Lennoxville. Clark William born Nov. 1st, 1920, married Barnice Walker and they live in Toronto. Ronald Allan born Dec. 24, 1922 is unmarried. Viola Isabel born Feb. 6, 1924 married Gerald Patterson. They reside at Caistor Centre, Ont. Andrew Nugent served as a councillor and school commissioner. He was also a church warden for the Anglican Church. He lost a brother and sister with Black Diphtheria, both died with in the same week. His brocher dressed the dead children and passed them through the window to be taken to be buried because the while family was in quarantine. He was a member of L.O.L. 559. Andrew also sold farm machinery such as wagons, cream seperators, ploughs, etc. Isabella Murray Nugent died Sept. 3, 1954 and Andrew died April 20, 1965. Leslie Murray Nugent "Murry" is the son of Andrew Nugent and Isabella Murray. He was born Feb. 26, 1915 on the 5th Range of Leeds, Lot 7B, 8A. Murray went one year to Kinnear's Mills school and eight years to Kinnear's Mills Consolidated School. He also attended Johnson's High School for one year. As a youth, Murray like to slide in the winter and he played hockey, football and softball at Kinnear's Mills. He had to help around the farm and also helped his mother to work in the house. He remembers that he often had to attend a church service twice on Sunday because his mother was Presbyterian and his father Anglican. He often had to drive his mother to church. Murray married Muriel Joy Thompson, August 18, 1945. They have three children. Donald George born Aug. 3, 1947, he resides at Montreal. Mabel Judy Nugent born Sept. 12, 1950. She married Alfred Melanson and they live at Bathurst, N.B. Dale Andrew born Dec1, 1952 who resides on the form with his parents. Murray has farmed for many years on Range 11, Lot 1B, 2A. He also did some carpentry work. He is Treasurer for the I.O.O.F. and Secretary for L.O.L 559. He has been Treasurer for Candlish United Church since Oct. 1955, and he served as a councillor and for 28 years was sec.-tres. for the School Board of Leeds South. Murray and Joy are both very active in the community. Murray still owns the old Nugent farm this making four generations that the land has remained in that name.
