Platte. -------- Lloyd W. B. Harding, 29, North Platte salesman, being held in Grand Island in connection with the death of Eldon Anderson, 33, in a Julesburg, Colo., hotel on December 1, according the Grand Island, made a "clean breast: of the slaying of the investment firm emplooye in a signed statement to county authorities there Tuesday. He told officers, the newspaper account said, that Anderson was killed accidentally when he and Harding were scuffling for possession of a gun that Anderson had when he (Anderson) declared that he "could shoot the button off of Harding's vest." HAD BEEN DRINKING. Harding delared that both he and Anderson had been drinking in Anderson's room at the hotel. while Harding declared that the killing was accidental, he admitted he had struck Anderson over the head with the butt of the gun, and as he swung a second time to strike him with the weapon, it was discharged, killing him. HARDING GETS 'LIFT.' Harding told officers that he had started out from North Platte on the morning of December 1, afoot, "bound for Ogallala or Cheyenne," when he was given a "lift" by Anderson, who was driving west. During the drive westward, according to Harding, Anderson left the main road, to see some farmer about finance matters and while off the highway they became stuck in now drift. After digging the car out, Harding said, they had several drinks of whisky from a jug which Anderson carried in the back of his car. PRODUCES GUN. Harding said that Anderson produced the gun, an automatic, and told him his emploers gave it to him for protection, Harding said Anderson talked at some length about the gun and even stopped the car once to shoot at a hawk. Harding said he did not see the hawk, and, as no shot was fired, evidently Anderson had been mistaken. Registering at a hotel at Julesburg, Harding said, the drinking continued until they had consumed virtually half of a gallon of whisky. The fight and shooting occurred late in the eveing while the two were sitting in Anderson's room, Harding said. Harding said Anderson pointed the gun at him and he warned him not to do it. Harding declared Anderson (Continued on Page Two) ---------------- ... [ page 3 ] ... ------------ ANDERSON'S SLAYER HELD ------ (Continued from page 1) ------ then became abusive and said he could shoot the buttons off Harding's vest. Fearing that he might try such a stunt, Harding said, he reached over and grasped the gun. A scuffle followed and Anderson bi three of Harding's fingers on his left hand. It was in an attempt to break Anderson's hold on the fingers that he began to club him over the head with the gun, which he had snatched from Anderson, Harding said, and the shot was fired. FALLS TO FLOOR, Anderson shook his head when the shot was fired, Harding said, and fell to the floor on his back. Harding said he did not think that the bullet had dtruck him and that ?? was the clubbing on the head that had stunned him Harding said he reached up, turned off the light and fled from the room, going down a hall and climbed out on to a roof from a bathroom window From the roof he dripped wight feet to the ground, he said. He then went around to the front of the hotel and gathered from the action of those in the lobby that the shot had not been heard. Entering the hotel by the front door, Harding said he went back to the room and went through Anderson's pockets, removed the keys of the car, tried to start the car, but didn't seceed so started off down the railroad tracks afoot. LEAVES AFOOT. Harding said he walked most of the night and slept the rest of the night in a straw stack. He spent Tuesday night in Ogallala and the next morning, Wednesday, first heard of the news that Anderson had been found dead and that he was being sought. The news stunned him, Harding said, and he was unable to eat. He declared he he does not recall just where he went or what he did the rest of the day, the knowledge upsetting him to such an extent that his mind was a blank all day. COMES TO N. PLATTE. Continuing on eastward, however, he walked through North Platte and was picked up there by a doctor who brought him to Grand Island, where he was arrested by police. Tuesday morning he was questioned bu Chief Francisco and Sheriff Palmer, and told them hist story. Harding's arrest was an accident. Police in Grand Island had been notified to stop the doctor and hold his car and when they found Harding in the car booked him for investigation. Harding said that several days ago he had decided to give himself up to authorities. He denied taking any money from Anderson. ------------ ... _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ name of newspaper: Scottsbluff Daily Star-Herald location: 1405 Broadway, Scottsbluff NE, 69361 date of article: Wednesday, December 10, 1930 edition: volume 30, number 137 page: page 1 column: 4 about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star-Herald source: https://www.newspapers.com/image/750061804 ADMITS SLAYING COMPANION WHEN ON BOOZE PARTY -------- North Platte Man Declares It Was Accident When Slew Man During Party -------- SCUFFLED OVER GUN AND DISCHARGED BY ACCIDENT -------- Were Drinking at Julesburg and Victim, from Home Town, Was Shot Down. The murder occurred at his room on the third floor of the hotel, in Julesburg, about midnight, when the young man had gone up to retire. The murderer concealed himself in Anderson's room, and when Elden came to bed, attacked him. The strange thing is that, during the mix-up, five or six shots were fired, and much disturbance made, and apparently no one got up to see what was the matter. A man scross the hall admitted hearing the shots and the demand of the robber for money. Anderson had a revolver which he shot once, and later it was found he had hit the robber in the hand. Anderson's body was not discovered until none o'clock the following morning, although it would seem that any hotel, even half decently managed, would have made an investigation of a case where six shots were fired within the building in the middle of the night. The robber is known, and officers are now after him. His wide, who resides at North Platte, is under arrest, and his picture has been secured, likewise his finger prints. It is only a questions of time until he will be brought to justice. It is believed he secured form $500 to $1000 of funds collected by Elden for the North Platte firm he represented. The murdered is believed to be Lloyd Harding, who know Anderson carried considerable money, and who followed him from North Platte. After the murder the robber took Anderson's car keys and tried to start his auto to get away in, but owing to the wound in his hand he could not do it. He left Julesbirg sometime during the night on a freight, and had his hand dressed at Big Springs, east of Julesburg. Elden Boyd Anderson, only son of Varal and Emma Anderson, was born near Jefferson, Iowa, June 28, 1907, and died at Julesburg, Colorado, December 2, 1930, at the age of 23 years, 5 months and 4 days. When Elden was a small child the family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, later to Holdrege, Nebraska, where he attend public and high school. The man being held in Grand Island was arrested Tuesday. ------ Funeral services for Elden B. Anderson, former Jefferson man who was murdered in Julesburg, Colo., Dec. 2, were held at the Slininger funeral home Friday afternoon, with burial in the Jefferson cemetery. The Rev.E.L. Marousek, pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducted the services. Pall bearers, all young men about Andersons' age and former friends of the young man, included Charles Lindsey, Harold Morain, George Franklin, Charles Schoppe, Willian Wuinlan and Harold Harper. Anderson's young widow and his mother and father accompanied his body to Jefferson for the funeral. They were guests of relatives here. Anderson was the granson of Mrs. John McClurg, and a newphew of Mrs. Lester Raax and Walter McClurg. Murdered by a Robber Anderson was brutally murdered Monday night of last week in his hotel room at Julesburg, Colo. Robbery was apparently the motive of the killing as Anderson was thought to have had considerable money on his person and the murderer escaped with most of his personal belnging, including his purse, overcoar and traveling bag Elden was employed by the Kain Investment company of North Platte, Neb. The first of the week he started on a collecting trip into Colorado, being accompanied by a party named Lloyd Harding, who posed as a sign salesman. Both registered at the same hotel in Julesburg Mondau evening but they occupied separate rooms. Other guests of the hotel recalled seeing the two North Platte men together during the eveing and Anderson is said to have retired to his room before midnight. Killed by Companion There is little doubt but that Adnerson was murdered by his companion, Harding, and a search is now being made over the western states for the fleeing criminal. Anderson's dead body was not found until Tuesday morning by hotel employees. Investigation showed that Harding was missing and had not ocupied his bed during the night. It is thought that he entered Anderson's toom before the latter retired. There were signs of furlous scuffle. Anderson was shot through the back of the head and through one hand. It is thought that Harding also received a gun wound in his hand as a man aswering his description visited a garage in Julesburg early Tuesday mrning and was thought to have boarded a freight train for Big Springs, Neb. Anderson carried a revolver with him, but the loaded clip was found behind the bed. His assailant evidently thought the weapon to be harmless with the clip removed, but there was a single shell remaining in the barrell. How persons in adjoining rooms did not hear the shooting is a mystery indeed.
