Lenord Brown, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:30 p.m. crash by the Morgan County Coroner's Office. Brown died on impact, Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone said. Several witnesses saw the plane falling from the air and some apparently heard the planes' engine sputtering just before it went down, Crone said. Weather does not appear to be factor in the crash; mechanical problems are suspected as a factor, the sheriff said. The plane had recently taken off from the airport but was not landing or taking off when it crashed, according to Crone. Wayne Wacker of Fort Morgan, who was driving on County Road W when he saw the plane go down, was the first person to reach the wreckage in the middle of a field of corn stubble. The plane went nearly straight down he said, and "it just T-boned" into the ground. Wacker plulled some wreckage off the pilot and unfastened his seat belt, but, he said, Brown was dead. Investigation is being conducted by the Morgan County Sheriff's Department and the county coroner's office. Neither the Federal Aviation Administration nor the National Transportation Safety Board will be involved in the investigation since the crash See Morgan, Page 7 [picture caption - see original article for picture] Fatal field Investigators huddle near the wreckage of an ultralight aircraft that crashed in a field near the Fort Morgan Airport Saturday afternoon, killing pilot Lenord Brown, 66, Fort Morgan. Others responding to the incident with the sheriff's department were the Colorado State Patrol, Morgan County Ambulance Service and Fort Morgan Fire Department. A pilot who knew Brown said he had been flying for more than 35 years and was an excellent pilot with many hours of flight time. The plane was a Hi-Max ultralight that Brown had bought used.
