Hopkins, who pased away suddenly in Freedom, N. H., on April 12, was born Lavinia Brown, daughter of Bartholomew and Martha Thurber Brown in Maple Grove, Megantic County, Que., on May 19, 1860. She was one of a large family. A brother Grant Brown, and a sister, Mrs. Katherine MacNeil, both of Avon, Mass., survive her. Coming to Lyndon to work, she met Elwin Hopkins and was married to him in August 1880. Mr. Hopkins family were long time residents of Lyndon, their home being the present C. J. Chester place. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins and their two daughters lived there also for a number of years. Mr. Hopkins was a printer and after leaving Lyndon to further engage in this trade, the family resided in Forest Hills, Mass., Portsmouth, N. H., and finally Freedom, N. H., where Mr. Hopkins pursued his work as long as health permitted. Mr. Hopkins died in 1936 and his widow continued to live in their home in Freedom until she became too frail to continue living alone. Generally called "Mina", she had many friends. She was a devoted wife and mother and lavished extreme devotion on her grandchildren, Herbert Gray, who died several years ago, and Beda Gray, who lived with them a great deal. She was an excellent cook and at one time when they lived in Portsmouth, N. H., she baked pies at the Navy Yard and was agreat favorite of the young sailors. She was also a great reader and kept a keen interest in current events. Sh leaves besides her brother and sister, her daughter, Gladys, (Mrs. Charles Gray) of North Conway, N. H., and grandaughter, Miss Beda Gray, of Montpelier. Her other daughter Bessie (Mrs. Fred Bradbury) passed away in 1938. Funeral services were held in Freedom, N. H., April 15 at the village church. The officiating minister was the Rev. Durgin of North Conway.
