A BRIEF HISTORY OF PROTESTANTS IN QUEBEC Until the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the Conquest of Quebec by the British, Quebec had been a Catholic colony. With the British soldiers, came Protestant chaplins, first Anglican and then Presbyterian, to minister to the soldiers and entrepreneurial merchants who saw a new oppotunity in Quebec. As English speaking colonists moved into Quebec, they brought with them their religious practives and practitioners. In the Eastern Townships, settled largely by Americans at first and later by immigrants from Ireland, Scotland and England, the predominant Protestant groups were Anglicans, Methodists, and Presbyterians. There same groups were also found in other areas of significant Protestant settlements such as the Ottawa valley, scattered pockets on the Lautentians, the southwestern Quebec counties of Huntington, Chateauguay and Beauharnois, The Gaspe peninsula and the cities of Montreal, Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers) and Quebec. Smaller Protestant sects - Adventists, Baptists, Catholic Apostolic, Congregationalists, Lutherans, Quakers, Swedenborgians (New Jerusalemites) and Unitarian/Universalists were also found in scattered numbers in the cities, the Eastern Townships and/or the Ottawa Valley. After the turn of the century, new Protestant groups, such as Jehovah's Witnesses, Pentecostal Assemblies, Salvation Army and numerous others found followers, especially in the large cities. ... ANGLICANS The Church of England, also referred to as the Anglican Church or Episcopal Church, was considered the state church by Protestants during the eighteenth century and to a lesser extent during the nineteenth century. It remained aloof from other Protestant sects, maintaining its tradition and eschewing the emotionalism which characterized much of nineteenth century Protestant growth. Because it was the closest thing to a state church, parishes were found in virtuall every area of the province where suffient numbers of English speaking Protestants were found and was often the only non-Catholic church in a given region. ...
