Porter, seconded by Mr. James Kerwin, and Resolved, That, as the Mayor ot this Municipality, after having been duly requested to call this meeting and to preside thereat, and after having given the proper notices convening the same—having failed to appear to preside after a reasonable lapse of time,—ie two hours after the time appointed, that this meeting do proceed to business, and that Mr. James Mltchel be requested to take the chair, and Mr. James Thom do act as secretary. —Carried. Moved by Mr. C. H. Peniston, seconded by Mr. James McKnight, and Resolved,—That Thomas Barwis Esquire, be requested to addrees this meeting on the subject for which it has bean called. -Carried. Moved by Mr. James McKnight, seconded by Mr. Cyrus W. Hail, and Resolved,-That It to to the interest of the English-speaking inhabitants of the county of Megantic, that at least one of the district officials of this district should be of British origin, seeing that there are already six officials French Canadians, and that the appointment of Mr. Bazil Theroux, to the office of Prothonatory, wonld place the whole of the appointments, in the hands of persons of French origin.—Carried. Moved by Mr. Richard C. Porter, seconded by Mr. Alexander McDonald, and Resolved,—That, as all the District appointments in this District, heretofore, have been from the Counties of Drummond and Arthabaska, and, with the exception of the late Prothonatory, all of French Canadian origin-in the present instance it would be just that a person of British origin from the County of Megantic should be appointed to said office.—Carried. Moved by Mr. Bartholomew Brown, seconded by Mr. W J. Ward, and Resolved,—-That the resolution passed by the County Council at its last session, recommending Mr. Bazil Theroux of Arthabaskaville to be the Prothonotary for this District is unjust and illegal, and was passed without the knowledge or consent of the Inhabitants of British origin in this Township,—therefor they do not recommend Mr. Bazil Theroux to be such Prothonotary as passed by the Connty Council—Carried. Moved by Mr. Patrick McNally, seconded by Mr. Francis Annesley, and Resolved,—That the Mayor, Mr. Simeon Lerochelle, did not represent the interests of the Township of Ireland in voting for the recommendation of Mr. Bazil Theroux, to the Prothonatoryship ; end that by so doing he has lost the confidence of the inhabitants of this Municipality.—Carried. Moved by Mr.James McKnight, seconded by Mr. W.J. Ward, and Resolved,—That the inhabitants of this Township take pleasure in recommending Thomas Barwis, Esquire, who has been an inhabitant of this County far thirty years, as a fit and proper peseon to fill the situation of Prothonotary of the District ot Arthabaska ; and who possesses foe confidence of the inhebitanta of this County, as appears by a requisition recommending him to the office of Stipendiary Magistrate, signed by fifteen hundred Electors of this County, of all orlgins.-Carried. Moved by Mr. Andrew Baird, seconded by Mr. James Kerwin, and Resolved,—That a copy of the proceedings of this meeting be sent to the Morning Chronicle, at Quebec, and the Megantic Argus, for publication, and that copies be distributed amongst the English-speaking inhabitants of the different Townships in this County.--Carried. Moved by Mr. Cyrus W. Hall, seconded by Mr. Joseph Kelley, and Resolved,—That Mr. James Mitchell be requested to leave the Chair, and that Mr. James McKnight be requested to occupy the same.—Carried. Moved by Mr. James Kerwin, seconded by Mr James Lynaugh, and Resolved,—That the thanks of this meeting be, and are, tendered to Mr. James Mitchell for his services as Chairman of this meeting. Hail, and Resolved,—That the Mayor, Mr. John McLean, be appointed Chairman of this meeting, and Mr James Thom, Secretary-Carried Moved by Richard C. Porter, seconded by George Dinning, and Resolved,—That the appointment of Colonel Barwis in conjunction with B. Thevoux, junr., Esq., as Prothonotary of the Superior Court for the District of Arthahaska, has given great satisfaction to the people of this Township, who are fully satisfied of his ability to discharge the important duties of his office. —Carried. Moved by Daniel Bennett, senr., J.P., seconded by William Cross, junior, and Resolved,—That this meeting feels that the said appointment is mainly due to the influance of the respected member for the County of Megantic, the Hon. George Irvine, Solicitor General, whose services to this Township, and to his constituents in general, are highly appreciated, and who well merits the confidence and support which it has been our privilege to extend to him, and which we shall be gratified by having an opportunity of continuing.—Carried.
