Viacom or the Borg

By now many people are aware that Viacom has decided it's necessary to protect it's copyright ownership on everything "Star Trek". My question -- why didn't Paramount (Gulf & Western) ever worry about this in the past? Why is this happening ONLY after Viacom bought Paramount Communications?

And Paramount has responded to the outcry with an explanation at the Star Trek web site. However, what's interesting is that the response is *NOT* from the Legal Dept, but from Paramount Digital Entertainment.
