Information about Bajor, DS9 and the Cardassians

Bajor: Class-M planet located near the Cardassian border. Bajor has at least five moons, the fifth a Class-M planetoid named Jeraddo.

The Cardassians annexed Bajor in 2328 for its abundant natural resources. During this time the Cardassians' efforts forced most Bajorans to resettle on other worlds. Due to growing terrorists efforts on Bajor and continued involvement against the Federation, the Cardassians abandoned Bajor and the orbiting mining station Terok Nor in 2369. The Federation renamed the station Deep Space Nine and administer it for Bajor as the focal point near the Wormhole.

[40K] Deep Space Nine [Terok Nor]: A Cardassian mining station built in orbit around Bajor in 2351, then abandoned in 2369. Starfleet assumed control at the request of the Bajoran Provisional Government. One of the more interesting features of DS9 is the Promenade which is the main commercial and retail center of the station.

The photo shows the NCC Enterprise-D docked at DS9 as it orbits Bajor.

[14K] Cardassia: Homeworld of the Cardassian Union. A planet poor in natural resources, but in ancient times the home to a splendid civilization whose legndary ruins are still considered some of the most remarkable in the galaxy.

The Cardassians are a humanoid race that has been involved in a bitter conflict with the UFP (United Federation of Planets, aka the Federation). An uneasy truce between the two was established in 2366, with the help of Ambassador Sarek. In 2367 a treaty established an armistice between the Feds and the Cardassians.

Pictured here is the former Prefect of Bajor prior to the Cardassian withdrawal, Gul Dukat. His office was on Terok Nor, now known as DS9.

Wormhole: Artificially-generated stable passageway to the Gamma Quadrant located in the Denorios Belt in the Bajoran star system. The wormhold was formed by particles of verterons that allow vessles to pass through on impulse power. In the Bajoran religion, the wormhole is the Celestial Temple, home of the Prophets who sent the Orbs to the people of Bajor.

Trivia note: The concept of a wormhole is also used in the planetarium show Orion Rendezvous, an astronomy show narrated by LeVar Burton.
