Today we have witnessed the grave cost of all great and worthwhile endeavors. But as seven pass on today, there will always be others willing to step into their empty places to pick up the challenge that must be faced. It is indeed a sad day for all of humanity. But realize this, they were doing something many of us can only dream of doing; they died doing something they loved and believed in; they died for their countries; they died following their dreams. If I could have been there, I would have, too. HAIL COLUMBIA! Joe Martinez Joe is a retired veteran with 20 years as a Helicopter Specialist in the US Navy. I am proud to say I grew up as an Air Force dependent (brat) and I married someone who served a few years in the Air Force. It's sad to see such special people leave us, I feel, only because we could use their courage and love to keep us going. I may never get to go up in space, but by gollie, I can write about it and go there in my dreams. ^_^ God bless the Columbia's crew and their families in their hour of need. They have inspired many and we will live on for them. Sincerely, Caroline Meier Sacramento, CA )

We learn that the child is a prince traveling from his home on a tiny asteroid. From this wise prince, the pilot recalls the innocent pleasures he put aside years earlier when he dedicated himself to adult goals. Near the end of the book, the Little Prince speaks to the pilot of their impending separation: "And at night you will look up at the stars. Where I live everything is so small that I cannot show you where my star will be found. It is better, like that. My star will be just one of the stars, for you. And so you will love to watch all the stars in the heavens... They will all be your friends. And, besides, I am going to make you a present..." He laughed again. "Ah, little prince, dear little prince! I love to hear that laughter!" "That is my present. Just that. It will be as when we drank water..." "What are you trying to say?" "All men have the stars," he answered, "but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent. You -- you alone -- will have the stars as no one else has them --" "What are you trying to say?" "In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night... You -- only you -- will have stars that can laugh!" The crew of Columbia are part of the Prince's world now. They were true pioneers seeking man's age-old dream of traveling among the stars. We will learn from this tragedy, as we must, and follow in their footsteps honoring those who have gone before us.)
James A. Keene (We can do so much to keep such tragedies from grounding our spirits again, and it would be such a shame to see these heroes who have died in pursuit of their dreams and all our hopes for expanding our Earthly horizons marred by an equal tragedy by refusing to move beyond all this together, and for the better. We are so close now to achieving these dreams on a level that everyone could truly appreciate, and even participate in some day. We must remain vigilant and demanding for this difficult transition back to the stars to succeed. I offer my complete support, in ever way that I possibly can. Sincerely, James A Keene)

This would go against everything the astronauts stood for, and no doubt against their wishes. When the Challenger disaster occurred in 1987, confidence concerning space exploration was shaken. We were reminded this journey to the stars was no scenic tour. It was and is a struggle, but a struggle that must remain if we wish to advance as a species. So many people have died in this and past ages for no reason at all. Don't add seven more names to that ancient list.)

Yes, they know it is the riskiest job imaginable, but still they do it. And yes, likely more people will die in the conquest of space. But think of what we are learning and how our world is improving because of what they do. And I believe they think it's worth it. And it is all so public 2 place & 2 place only has the set up to handle the very complex procedures needed to launch a manned spacecraft & the whole world watchesas we carry their hopes & dreams up & out don't count them out of picture for the future even if China does get a manned space program operational. For all of us watching the launch "live and in person" that day, there could be no doubt that the spacecraft had been destroyed. It felt like a physical blow to me. It was like losing a close friend. And, it has happened again. I certainly hope this this disaster does not cause our government to further cut the budget of our space program. I firmly believe that our baby steps into space have shown, perhaps more than anything else, the greatness that this species is capable of. For, if mankind is the animal that plans for the future, then the efforts we put into venturing beyond our little planet -- knowing that majority of the benefits earned form such a venture may not be realized for generations --may be the most human of all our endeavors. Let us learn from this tragedy, let us do our grieving, and then let us -- cautiously -- get back to the most human of enterprises: exploring the universe. Science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein wrote: "The Earth is too small and fragile a basket for humanity to keep all its eggs in." This is as true now as it has ever been. Dan J. Daniel Cox (Exploration of what lurks, or doesn't, is important to the continuity of our race in this small world we call home. It would be a sad, sad day if space was forgotten. Tragedy aside, I think that all of us need to know what is really out there, and if even one Sci-fi story is possible, both in fact, and fiction. )
Michael A. Wells
Alex Waters ( (If we were not meant to go up in space we would not have the shuttles, My regards go out to all the people who work together to help us get a better understanding of the world beyond the reach of most of us. I would like to say thank you for making me want to reach for my goals. To all those who were part of the Colombia God Bless.I'm aware of the risks that we must take to reach the stars, but if we never took any risks then we would never know about the great worlds beyond our own. I was born the day the Challenger exploded, the day the whole world mourned, and after years we found the courage to return to space, let us find the same courage that we all have within us to return to space and continue to amaze the world.) )

Sam Costanza (Keep reaching for the stars, America! Losing Columbia and her crew should not be the end of our space program, but rather offer us an opportunity to continue, but in a smarter way, and with more concern for the safety of the crews. Far from science fiction, space exploration is truly our last, best hope for survival. Forget the tragic (and stupid) conflict in Iraq and start funding the future. If not, the government of the US will be personally responsible for the extermination of all life on this Earth.)

Matthew David Baird (When disaster strikes there is nothing for it but to pick yourself up, gather the pieces together and start anew, however painful. They sacrifice of these astronauts, deserve & demand that. They lived their dream, one that was larger then perhaps themselves, larger then any of us and many of the more mundane or petty concerns of the nations of this planet. They touched the stars, now they are a part of them. The best memorial to them and all of those who proceeded and them and will I hope follow them, is to continue to strive for space, to look neither to the left, nor to the right but keep pressing forward, relentlessly towards, what I hope is a dream worth living for, our future.)

Elaine P. Farrell (A little more than 500 years ago three ships set sail from Europe for exploration and future commerce practicalities. They did not fall off the edge of the Earth as predicted by some yet they did succeed in establishing a new continent and frontier for a population needing more space. Space exploration is necessary for generations of humanity to come. It is not merely if; is is when this need will materialize as crucial to our species and other life forms on this planet. The sacrifices our explorers lay their lives down for are for a common goal. Where will we be in 500 more years?)
