Subject: Just saying hello I just wanted to welcome you to the system. I'm Andrew Burt, aka 'aburt', the system administrator, prof, and resident kernel hacker; if there's anything I can do to make Nyx more enjoyable for you, please drop me a line. Note that common questions are answered in the "faq" menu option on the main menu. Running Nyx is basically a hobby of mine, and I juggle a lot of "real" work (teaching (things like OS theory), research, admin, consulting), so PLEASE check the "faq" first before asking me -- it answers the most common questions I get asked (in more detail than I could answer by mail if you did ask!); and note that a question you might think is peculiar to you is in fact quite commonly asked. In fact, I suggest you read it over just for the heck of it. One quick note -- if you're seeing everything in all caps, with backslashes everywhere, log back in using lower case for your username ($1). The most common question is "can I get full access?" -- yes, see the "info" menu, "a" option. The 'pre' option in the main menu explains what works in "preview" mode, and 'val' explains why it has to be this way. If you get validated: Please see the disk space policies in the info menu for information about disk usage. A short summary: Users are asked to keep their disk space usage under 2MB. If you need to *temporarily* store large files, no problem -- IF you put them in /nyx/tmp/$1 and remove them immediately when done (use the 's'tatus menu 'ct' and 't' options). If you obtain large files that are of use to other users, put them in the upload directory by doing "upload copy filenames..."; if you have other reasons for needing lots of disk space, ask me about where to put it. Please understand that all users (many thousand) share 300Mb for home directories -- so the current policy (which has become Draconian because users ignored the voluntary policy), is the automatic removal of *ALL* your files if you ever have more than 1 MB in your home directory!!! Please, be considerate of others. Lastly, some users seem to think hacking/cracking on Nyx would be fun -- Please read the file /.hacking before doing anything like this. It SERIOUSLY jeapordizes Nyx's very existence. Anyway, the system is pretty good sized, so just explore and have fun...
