Frequently Asked Tech Support Questions, as of 4/3/02 ====================================================================== - Who are you?!? If you feel a little awkward returning someone else's phone messages, say something like you're returning their call about Nyx (remember to pronounce as "nicks") and that you're a Nyx user who helps out with phone calls since we don't do phone support for Nyx. ====================================================================== - How do I get into Nyx? Log in as 'new' to Nyx (nyx.net by network, 303-409-1401 by phone) to find out more about Nyx and/or create yourself an account. That phone number has 24 lines, they work at any speed (300bps to v.32bis). Use 8bits No parity when calling in by modem. ====================================================================== - What does it cost? Nyx is free (well, except for long distance charges, etc.) and, like public television, grows by donations. Note that there is a validation procedure, though still free. Have them log in, get an account, then read the val/a file. ====================================================================== - What is it? It is run by Nyx Net, a non profit corporation in Denver, to provide internet access to those who don't have it. ====================================================================== - Will it work with XYZ comm. prog. Probably. If it does vt100-ish emulation, use that. ====================================================================== - Will it work with my ABC brand modem? Probably. If they have a USRobotics HST, they'll want to call 409-1401. ====================================================================== - How can I find out more? Log in and read the various documents (history, philosophy, faq, etc.). ====================================================================== - How can I get in if it's always busy or doesn't answer? If it doesn't answer, chances are something is down. Try later. If it's busy... it's busy. There are 24 lines, but they're often all in use. Keep trying. ====================================================================== - I can connect, but it hangs right after I enter my login This is the infamous not-8N1 problem -- tell them to use 8bits No parity. It's on my list to track down, but is fairly minor, so I haven't done it yet.
