Nyx Shell/Internet Access Procedures 1. Do I want to read the rest of this? This is for users who desire to use the following aspects of Nyx: - Shell access - Programming access (i.e., to write programs) - Use of 'ftp' Note that most Nyx users do not need this level of access -- mail, NetNews, and file downloads are fully usable at all times. You can also telnet into Nyx with no problem. If this is all you need, don't bother reading the rest of this document. This applies ONLY to existing Nyx users; you must first have an account on Nyx (log in as 'new' to nyx.net, 303-409-1401). This form will get you an account. 2. If yes to #1, why do I have to read this? Because Nyx is connected to the Internet, we must take precautions to ensure only acceptable use of the network and provide accountability in cases of abuse. To prevent events such as the "Internet Worm" from being started from Nyx, we have been asked to do this -- it is either that or disconnect Nyx from the net. We at we felt that it was better to provide access (with authentication) than not provide net access at all. Thus, your patience and cooperation with these procedures is greatly appreciated. (And, indeed, complaints about it are not going to change it) We are also concerned about the implications of providing users with free long distance interactive connections to remote sites. Thus, we require that you limit your direct use of Internet to transferring files via ftp. 3. Ok, so what do I have to do? In order to be granted access to the shell, programming, and ftp capabilities of Nyx you must do the following things: A. Read the statement, below; then B. Deliver a "valid" signed copy of the form (below) to us; "valid" means you *must* use one of the following methods: 1. Bring the completed and signed form IN PERSON to one of our in person validators, where you will be required to show positive identification (driver's license, or other photo ID). *OR* 2. Print out the form; photocopy a picture ID of yourself; then obtain a NOTARIZED SIGNATURE on the form (i.e., you sign it in the presence of a Notary Public, who checks your ID). In the United States, you can find a Notary in many places: most banks offer this service to customers for free, most large businesses have employees who are notaries (try the legal department, maybe an accounting department). In other countries, the procedure may differ; ask at a bank or other legal institution about some form of "guaranteed signature". Then mail your notarized form and ID photo to: Nyx Shell Authorization PO Box 753 Littleton, Colorado (USA) 80160-0753 *OR* 3. Out of consideration for those Nyx users who have made a donation to Nyx via a personal check, which is fairly accurate proof of identity, your personal check may serve as your proof of identity. To request shell access, send an e-mail note to aburt indicating (a) the check number of your donation check (as proof that the person sending the e-mail is the same person who wrote the check) and (b) that you agree to the terms of this document. Note that no other form of donation can provide the same proof -- company checks, credit cards (easy to fake), etc. will NOT suffice. Note also that this is NOT a request for a donation -- no donation is required or even requested. This is simply out of consideration for those who have already provided adequate proof of identity. Here is the agreement (next page): Agreement Name: ________________________________________________ Date: __________ Type of account (Anonymous, Regular, BOTH):_____________________________ [If you have one: Your "normal" internet address, user@full.host.name: __________________________________________] Home address: Street: ______________________________________ Apt: ___________ City: ____________________ State: _________ Country if not US: _______ Zip/Postal code: ___________ Home phone number: (_____) _____-__________ Employer (or school if full time student): _____________________________ Work phone number: (_____) _____-__________ I agree that by signing this form I am personally liable for any use of my Nyx usercode not in accordance with the following "acceptable use" guidelines: - I will not attempt to access any systems I am not authorized to use;); - I will cease any given network use I am engaged in upon request by representatives of Nyx or the Internet (i.e., if a particular use is deemed inappropriate you will quit). I further understand that Nyx is not a guaranteed service; it may disappear at any time. Finally, I will NOT hold Nyx Net liable for any damages I incur through the use or lack of use of Nyx.
